The Great Stir Plate Experiment

I’ve decided to build a magnetic stir plate. Why you may ask? Well, to help out with my yeast starters. It’s supposed to boost the yeast cell count so your starters will be bigger, thus cutting down on lag time between pitching and active fermentation. I like playing around with yeast and yeast starters. Making a starter and watch it bubbling away makes me almost feel as if I’m doing a small batch of beer. Silly, I know.

Here are some examples of what others have done for stir plates:

I went to Princess Auto today and purchased a 12 volt computer case fan (aka muffin fan) and some magnets. I also have a few old cell phone chargers laying around, so I’ll choose a good one and use that as the 12 volt power supply. I’ll still need a case to put the whole thing in, an on/off switch, a rheostat (whatever the hell that is) to use for speed control, an Erlenmeyer flask and finally a stir bar to drop inside the starter. That’s quite a shopping list. I’ll keep you updated as to my progress.

The flask and the stir bar I may have to purchase from a scientific supply company. I do have a 1 litre wine jug that I’ve been using for my starters, but I’m not sure if the bottom of that would work with a spinning stir bar. And I have read about people making their own stir bars by taking the shaft of a nail, inserting it into some plastic tubing, then melting the ends shut. If I can’t McGyver something together I’ll look at purchasing.

I just realize what a complete beer geek I’ve become.
